4 DAYS/3 NIGHTS
Featuring: visit of Giuseppe Verdi’s Lands
June 4th, 2016 sailing on the Costa Diadema from Savona
DAY 1 IMILAN AIRPORT I SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE HOTEL
Upon your arrival you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel Santa Margherita Ligure. The balance of the day is at leisure for you to get acquainted with the area. Hugging the Mediterranean coastline from the French border to the tip of Tuscany lies a crescent-shape strip of land that makes up the region of Liguria. The western sector is known as the Riviera di Ponente, the coast of the setting sun, and has relatively wide beaches and lush landscapes. The eastern Riviera di Levante, the coast of the rising sun, is more weathered and offers areas of wild and craggy drama.

DAY 2 I SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE I CINQUE TERRE I SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE
Today you will have the opportunity to visit Cinque Terre (Five Lands), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved natural and seminatural parts of the Mediterranean. Hillside olive groves and vineyards perched along the coast are typical of this dramatic region where for over a thousand years people have lived cultivating the steep hillsides and fishing the blue waters. Your guided tour will explore the must-sees of the Cinque Terre from both land and sea, with a combination of easy walks, village visits, train rides and short boat trips between the villages. A visit of the area will not be complete without a typical Ligurian-style lunch at a local restaurant. (B, L)

DAY 3 I SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE I GIUSEPPE VERDI’S LANDS I SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE
Today we will visit the lands so dear to the heart of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. In fact, for 80 of his 88 years, the "Maestro" lived in this same small corner of northern Italy, keeping a residence just a few kilometers from where he was born. We start our journey in Verdi’s birthplace, Roncole, a small village in the province of Parma, an area steeped in history, art and food traditions, a land of winter fog, farming, poplar trees and the mighty Po River. See here the rural house where he was born. Directly in front of the house is the equally unpretentious Church of San Michele Arcangelo, where Verdi was baptized in 1813. It is here that he learned to sing and play the organ – the same organ that, one year before his death in 1900, he repaired. Continue northwest through Parma’s countryside to Busseto, where Verdi received his first music lessons and met his first love. Here we will visit the Casa Barezzi Museum. The main room, where Verdi composed and performed the works of his youth, is still decorated with the original furniture, including his Tomaschek piano. The visit continues into the adjacent rooms, which contain original letters, posters and portraits that give a fascinating look into Verdi’s life and career. Across the street is Piazza Verdi, where a statue of the composer was erected in 1913. Also on the square is Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, a theater built between 1856 and 1868, still used for music performances and events. The last stop will be at Villa Verdi. The composer moved to this house in 1851 with his second wife, the famous soprano Giuseppina Strepponi. Verdi and Strepponi requested that their rooms be on the ground floor so they could be closer to nature. It is here, at the original desk in his bedroom, that Verdi composed some of his most important works, such as Il Trovatore, La Traviata, Don Carlos, Aida and his last masterpiece, Falstaff. (B)
